Milan is an easy city for New Year's. It's compact and walkable, the Duomo and the Galleria are lit up for the holidays, and in the days around Dec 31 you can see a Leonardo, go to La Scala and take a train to Lake Como. What you shouldn't expect is a guaranteed, Times Square–style countdown. There's no fixed program, and the rules on fireworks and drinks in the center are strict.
This guide separates what's officially confirmed for 2026 from what hasn't been announced, and gives you a Dec 30–Jan 2 itinerary that works whatever happens in Piazza del Duomo. Sources are listed at the end.
Plan it in minutes: generate your Milan NYE itinerary at your Milan NYE itinerary. You get a day-by-day plan you can edit, pinned on an interactive 3D map, and you can add bookable experiences on Lets2Go when they're available.

What New Year's Eve in Milan is like
Piazza del Duomo: past editions and 2026
The square in front of the cathedral is where people in Milan naturally gather at midnight. For years it also hosted a big free concert. According to the Corriere della Sera, the last of those concerts took place on Dec 31, 2019. For NYE 2025 the mayor said the square couldn't host one because part of it was taken up by installations for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. He said the music would come back at the end of 2026.
Here's where 2026 stands. On July 9, 2026, the Comune di Milano published a public call for expressions of interest from partners to organize and stage the "Capodanno 2026/2027" event in Piazza del Duomo. The call closed in August 2026, and the city's page now shows it as closed. As of Sep 28, 2026, the city hasn't announced a selected organizer, a program, performers, start times or access rules. So there are two things we can say: the city has formally started the process, and the 2026 program has not been announced. Anything you see online naming artists should be treated as rumor until the Comune or the official organizer confirms it.
Rules in the center on Dec 31
For NYE 2025, a mayoral ordinance on comune.milano.it banned glass bottles, glass containers, cans and fireworks in Piazza del Duomo, the Galleria and within 200 m of the surrounding streets from 1 pm on Dec 31 to 6 am on Jan 1. From 6 pm, shops inside the 90/91 ring road couldn't sell takeaway drinks in glass or cans, or spirits; table service in bars was allowed. The 2026 ordinance hasn't been published yet. Check comune.milano.it in the last week of December, and plan a toast without glass if you'll be in the square.
Fireworks: check the current ordinance
Milan has restricted fireworks for years, with specific ordinances around New Year's. Fireworks are allowed only within strict limits. In May 2026, according to ANSA, the city council approved a change to the city's Urban Police Regulation (Regolamento di Polizia Urbana) that bans the use of fireworks and firecrackers near people and animals, homes, schools, hospitals, care homes, apartment courtyards, protected natural areas and green spaces used by animals. The only exceptions are events the city specifically authorizes. In a dense city, that covers most places you're likely to be.
Our advice is simple: don't buy, bring or set off fireworks in Milan, and check the current ordinance on comune.milano.it before your trip. If the city authorizes an official show, it will be announced through official channels.
Where people spend the night
- In the square, if an event is confirmed. Arrive early, pack light and expect security checks and restrictions.
- At a New Year's dinner (cenone). Many restaurants serve a fixed New Year's menu, and they fill up. Book as soon as your dates are set.
- At La Scala. The Dec 31 Nutcracker starts at 6 pm and runs about 2 hours 6 minutes including the intermission, according to La Scala. That leaves time for dinner afterward.
- In the neighborhoods. Navigli, Brera and Porta Nuova/Isola are all lively on a normal night out. For Dec 31, check each bar's or club's own announcements; we haven't verified any 2026 programs.
Why Dec 30–Jan 2 works
In 2026, Dec 30 is a Wednesday, Dec 31 a Thursday, Jan 1 a Friday and Jan 2 a Saturday. Two things to know: the Duomo Museum is closed on Wednesdays (Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo), and on Jan 1 the Last Supper Museum is closed and ATM runs a public-holiday timetable. Many museums, shops and restaurants close or change hours on Jan 1, so check each place.
The 4-day Milan New Year's itinerary (Dec 30 – Jan 2)
The plan assumes you arrive on the morning of Dec 30. Fewer days? See the 3-day version below.
Day 1 (Wed, Dec 30): Duomo, rooftops and the Galleria
- Morning: go straight to the Duomo. Buy tickets on the official site, ticket.duomomilano.it. The rooftops can be reached by lift or on foot, with separate tickets for each. Remember the Duomo Museum is closed on Wednesdays, so a combo ticket that includes it is better used on another day. Combo tickets are valid for two days, according to the Duomo.
- Midday: walk through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II to Piazza della Scala. The Galleria is a covered public arcade, so it's a good place to be if it's raining.
- Afternoon: check in, rest, and if it's still light, walk up to Brera.
- Evening: see The Nutcracker at La Scala (8 pm) if you got tickets, or have dinner in Brera. Book dinner for Dec 31 today if you haven't already.
Day 2 (Thu, Dec 31): Leonardo, the Castle and New Year's Eve
- Morning: see the Last Supper. Booking is mandatory for everyone, even free tickets. Arrive 30 minutes before your slot; the visit lasts 15 minutes, and dates can't be changed or refunded. Sold out? The museum releases extra tickets every Wednesday at noon for the following week, online only.
- Late morning: walk to the Castello Sforzesco and on into Parco Sempione. Check the castle museums' holiday-week hours before you go.
- Afternoon: rest. It's a long night.
- Evening, option A (culture): The Nutcracker at La Scala at 6 pm, then a late dinner.
- Evening, option B (classic): a New Year's dinner, then Piazza del Duomo at midnight if an event is confirmed and you're comfortable in dense crowds. Follow the ordinance: no glass, no cans, no fireworks.
- Evening, option C (low-key): a toast in Brera or along the Navigli, away from the densest crowds.
- Getting home: check ATM's NYE service in advance (see "Getting around"). Save your route in the Lets2Go app before you head out. It keeps your itinerary available offline.
Day 3 (Fri, Jan 1): slow day in the neighborhoods
- Late morning: walk along the Naviglio Grande and Darsena canals. They're pleasant for walking even when many places are closed. Or go to Porta Nuova for the modern skyline and on to Isola.
- Afternoon: go back to the Duomo area if the cathedral or rooftops are open on Jan 1. Check the official site, as holiday schedules can change.
- Evening: have a relaxed dinner. Book ahead if you can, because Jan 1 openings vary a lot.
- Reminder: the Last Supper is closed on Jan 1, and the metro and trams run a public-holiday timetable.
Day 4 (Sat, Jan 2): day trip or Otello
- Option A: Lake Como. Direct Trenord regional trains from Milano Centrale to Como San Giovanni take about 40 minutes. From Milano Cadorna they go to Como Lago, near the lakefront, in about 60 minutes.
- Option B: Bergamo. Direct Trenord trains from Milano Centrale to Bergamo take about 48–50 minutes. Walk or ride up to the walled Città Alta for the views.
- Evening: Verdi's Otello at La Scala (8 pm), which is also on Dec 29.
- Tip: check the Trenord timetable for the exact day. Holiday-period service can differ from the standard pages.
3-day version (Dec 30 – Jan 1)
Keep Days 1–3 and swap the Jan 1 afternoon for a short Brera or Porta Nuova walk. Can't get Last Supper tickets? Spend that Dec 31 slot on the Duomo rooftops, then go to the Castello.
5-day version (Dec 29 – Jan 2)
Arrive on Tuesday Dec 29 and see Otello at La Scala (8 pm) that night. Then follow Days 1–4.
Make it yours: paste this plan into Lets2Go's planner and it will turn it into an editable day-by-day plan on a 3D map. You can add guided tours or a Lake Como day trip when bookable experiences are available. Traveling earlier in December? Combine Milan with our European Christmas markets 2026 guide. Booking the big three: Last Supper, Duomo, La Scala
- Last Supper: book only on cenacolovinciano.org (online up to 5 tickets, or by phone). The museum caps purchases at 5 tickets per calendar year. The September–December 2026 release went on sale on June 23, 2026, so Dec 30–31 slots are in that release, though availability isn't guaranteed. For Jan 2, 2027, the museum's official quarterly schedule says January 2027 reservations open in September 2026; no separate 2026 release date or time is listed, so check cenacolovinciano.org for live availability. Tickets are in the visitor's name.
- Duomo and rooftops: buy on ticket.duomomilano.it. The Duomo says online tickets carry no service fee. There are lift and stairs options, plus fast-track tickets. December 2026 holiday hours haven't been published yet.
- La Scala: tickets for The Nutcracker go on sale Oct 16, 2026 at 1 pm and the Otello performances on Dec 29 and Jan 2 go on sale Oct 14, 2026 at 1 pm (Milan time). La Scala warns about unauthorized resellers and says teatroallascala.org is the only safe, guaranteed channel. We found no separate New Year's Eve concert in the 2026/27 listings.
Getting around on NYE and New Year's Day
- The 2026 NYE service hasn't been published by ATM yet. Check atm.it and the ATM app in the last week of December.
- The service changes from year to year. ATM's 2019–20 holiday PDF kept the metro open late on Dec 31 (last trains from the center around 2 am). For NYE 2025, press reports of ATM's notice described a Saturday timetable with last trains around midnight, then night buses, and Duomo station closed from 7 pm on public-safety orders (use San Babila, Cordusio, Montenapoleone or Missori instead). Don't assume either pattern for 2026.
- Jan 1 runs a public-holiday timetable, and some lines have special schedules.
- Tickets: ATM advises buying tickets in advance for holidays, because shops that sell them may be closed. You can also pay by contactless card at the metro turnstiles.
- From the airports: the Malpensa Express (Trenord) connects Malpensa Airport with Milano Cadorna and Milano Centrale. Linate is on metro line M4.
- Don't drive into the center. The historic center is inside Area C, a paid access zone, and parking is scarce.
Where to stay: Milan by area
| Area | Good for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Duomo / Centro Storico | Walking to the square at midnight and to the main sights | Busiest and loudest on NYE. Access around the square may be restricted in the evening |
| Brera | Charm, restaurants, walking to La Scala and the Duomo | Book early. Rooms are limited |
| Cadorna / Magenta | The Last Supper, the Castello, Malpensa Express, trains to Como Lago | Quieter at night |
| Centrale / Porta Nuova / Isola | Trains to Como and Bergamo, modern Milan, Isola's bars | Farther from the Duomo; you'll use the metro |
| Navigli / Porta Genova | Nightlife, canal walks | Lively late, so ask for a quiet room |
Tip: if you'll be out late on Dec 31, stay somewhere you can walk home from or reach without the metro. The NYE timetable isn't known yet.
Budget tips (no made-up prices)
- Book the fixed-date things first: Last Supper, La Scala and your Dec 31 dinner. Each has limited capacity.
- Compare hotel areas. Staying near Centrale or Cadorna suits a trip with a day trip. Compare total prices, not nightly rates.
- Pay once for the Duomo. The combo tickets cover the cathedral, rooftops and museum over two days, according to the Duomo. Just remember the museum's Wednesday closure.
- Use regional trains for day trips. Trenord runs direct trains to Como and Bergamo.
- Look for free highlights. The Galleria, the Duomo's exterior, Brera's streets, the Navigli and Parco Sempione cost nothing.
Weather and packing
It's winter in northern Italy, so pack for cold evenings and possible rain. We don't quote averages because we haven't checked an official climate dataset for this guide. Look at an official forecast a few days before you fly.
Pack: a warm coat, layers, comfortable waterproof shoes, a compact umbrella, a power bank, and a small bag with no glass bottles if you plan to go to the square.
Time difference for your family calls: in December, Milan is on Central European Time (UTC+1). That's 1 hour ahead of the UK and 6 hours ahead of US and Canadian Eastern Time. Midnight in Milan is 6 pm in New York and Toronto, and 3 pm in Los Angeles.
FAQ
Last verified: 28 Sep 2026 (America/Santo_Domingo). Dates, hours and rules can change, so check the official pages before booking.
Is there a New Year's Eve concert in Piazza del Duomo in 2026?
It hasn't been announced. As of 28 Sep 2026, the City of Milan has run a public call for a partner to organize a "Capodanno 2026/2027" event in Piazza del Duomo (published 9 July 2026; applications closed in August 2026), but no organizer, performers, times or access rules have been announced.
The last New Year's Eve concert in the square was on 31 December 2019, according to the Corriere della Sera. In November 2025 the mayor ruled out a concert for NYE 2025, saying Winter Olympics installations took up about 30% of the square, and none was held. Treat any artist names you see before an official announcement as unconfirmed.
