New York in December is the Christmas you've seen in movies: skaters under the Rockefeller Center tree, markets in the parks, decorated store windows, the Rockettes, and whole Brooklyn blocks covered in lights. It's also busy, cold and easy to over-plan. This guide gives you the 2026 dates that have been officially announced (and is clear about the ones that haven't), a 4-day itinerary with 3- and 5-day versions, and practical tips on crowds, budget and what to pack.

Plan it in minutes: get a day-by-day New York itinerary at your day-by-day New York itinerary. Set your dates and pace, then add bookable experiences on Lets2Go when they're available.

What the dates mean for your trip

  • The officially dated attractions overlap from Nov 4, 2026 to Jan 3, 2027. Bryant Park's rink and Holiday Shops, Radio City and the Rockefeller rink are all open then. Union Square and Columbus Circle are coming back in 2026, but their dates haven't been announced. The tree is lit from the lighting ceremony, which has been in late November or early December in recent years.
  • Want the tree lit? Keep your dates flexible and check rockefellercenter.com before booking. Before the ceremony, the tree is usually up but covered in scaffolding. We'll update this guide when Rockefeller Center announces the 2026 date.
  • Going after Christmas? Bryant Park's rink is open until Feb 28, 2027, the Shops until Jan 3, and Radio City until Jan 4. Union Square's 2026 dates haven't been announced, so check urbanspacemarkets.com before counting on it.

Heads-up: the 2026 tree lighting date has not been announced. In recent years the ceremony has been in late November or early December (Nov 29, 2023; Dec 4, 2024; Dec 3, 2025), but that's a past pattern, not a 2026 date. Keep your plans flexible and check rockefellercenter.com.

Who New York at Christmas suits

Traveler Why it works Suggested pace
First-time visitors The famous sights are at their most festive, and most are close together in Midtown 4–5 days
Couples Skating, lights, a Broadway show, skyline views at dusk 3–4 days, midweek
Families Rockettes, Santa visits, rinks with skate aids, windows at kid height 4–5 days, earlier in the day
Shoppers Several holiday markets plus Fifth Avenue and Herald Square Put markets and windows first
Short on time Midtown alone has the tree, the rinks, the windows and Radio City 3 days

Best time to go (crowd tradeoffs)

  • Mid-November to Thanksgiving: Bryant Park and Radio City are open (Union Square's 2026 dates aren't announced yet). The tree isn't lit yet, since the ceremony has been in late November or early December in recent years.
  • Thanksgiving weekend (Nov 26–29): the 100th Macy's Parade. Big crowds, and hotels fill up early.
  • After the lighting ceremony, on weekdays: a good balance if you want the tree lit. The 2026 lighting date isn't announced yet (recent ceremonies: Nov 29, 2023; Dec 4, 2024; Dec 3, 2025), so wait for the announcement before you lock in dates. Bryant Park's own tip is that weekdays and mornings are less crowded.
  • Mid-to-late December: peak season. Everything's open, but expect the longest lines and the highest hotel demand.
  • Christmas to New Year's: some markets have closed, Midtown is packed and Times Square fills up on Dec 31. Radio City runs until Jan 4.
  • Early January: quieter. The rinks are still open, and the tree usually stays up into January.

4-day New York Christmas itinerary

Works best between the tree lighting (2026 date not announced yet) and Christmas Eve. Before the lighting, swap the tree for Bryant Park and the markets.

Day 1 — Midtown classics. Start at Rockefeller Center: the tree, the Channel Gardens and the rink. Next, visit St. Patrick's Cathedral across the street, then walk Fifth Avenue to see the store windows. See an afternoon or evening performance of the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall, which is right beside Rockefeller Center. Finish at Bryant Park's Holiday Shops and rink, with The New York Public Library lit up next door.

Day 2 — Central Park and the Upper West Side. Walk into Central Park from the south end for the winter landscapes and the skyline views from the bridges and paths. Skate at the park's rink if you like (check the NYC Parks site for the season's dates). In the afternoon, go to the Columbus Circle Holiday Market at the park's southwest corner if it's open by then. Spend the evening on a Broadway show or at Times Square's lights.

Day 3 — Downtown and Brooklyn lights. Spend the morning at the Union Square Holiday Market (back in 2026; dates not announced yet, so check before you go). Walk through Greenwich Village and the West Village, then get lunch at Chelsea Market and walk the High Line. After dark, take the subway to Dyker Heights in Brooklyn for the lights. The easiest way to get there is a guided bus tour, bookable on Lets2Go when available.

Day 4 — Bridges, views and Herald Square. Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge early in the morning, before the crowds, and explore DUMBO for the classic Manhattan Bridge photo. Head back to Midtown to see Macy's Herald Square and its windows. End with a sunset view from an observation deck (Top of the Rock, the Empire State Building or another), then say goodbye to the tree.

3-day version: combine Days 2 and 4. Do Central Park in the morning, then Herald Square and a sunset observation deck. Keep Dyker Heights on Day 3.
5-day version: add a museum and Grand Central day. Spend the morning at a big museum such as The Met or the American Museum of Natural History, then see Grand Central Terminal at dusk. Or spread Brooklyn over a whole day so you have time for neighborhoods and food.

Make it yours: paste this plan into Lets2Go's planner to get a day-by-day plan with maps. You can add guided lights tours, food walks or show tickets when bookable experiences are available on Lets2Go. Want more winter trip ideas? Try our 5-day Lapland itinerary. Ice rinks

  • The Rink at Rockefeller Center: the famous one, right under the tree. Opens Oct 10, 2026. Tickets are timed, so book ahead for December.
  • Bryant Park Winter Village: Bryant Park calls it NYC's largest free admission ice skating rink. If you bring your own skates, skating is free; skate rental is paid. Book a time slot online, even if you bring your own skates. The park's own tip: weekday mornings, and dates before Thanksgiving or after New Year's, are least crowded.
  • Central Park: there's also a seasonal rink in the park. Check NYC Parks for the 2026–27 dates and operator.

Holiday markets

  • Bryant Park Holiday Shops (Oct 28 – Jan 3): open-air kiosks by the rink with artisans from New York and around the world.
  • Union Square Holiday Market (back in 2026; dates not announced yet): lots of local makers, right above a major subway hub.
  • Columbus Circle Holiday Market (returning in 2026, dates pending): at the entrance to Central Park.

Lights and windows

  • The tree at Rockefeller Center (2026 lighting date not announced yet).
  • Fifth Avenue and Herald Square windows: usually unveiled in mid-to-late November. Walk past after dark when they're lit.
  • Dyker Heights: homeowners go all out with their displays. Please be respectful: stay on the sidewalk, keep your voice down and don't block driveways.

Shows

  • Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes: Nov 4, 2026 – Jan 4, 2027, with multiple shows a day at peak times. Buy from the official site or the box office.
  • Broadway: plenty of shows run through the holidays. Matinees can be easier for families and people with jet lag.

What to eat

  • Warm drinks and market food at the Bryant Park and Union Square stalls make lunch easy.
  • New York classics: a slice of pizza, a bagel for breakfast, a deli sandwich, a street-cart pretzel.
  • Chelsea Market has lots of choices under one roof, which helps when it's cold.

Budget tips (no made-up prices)

  • Book your hotel early. December is peak season, and Thanksgiving week and the days before Christmas fill up first. Staying near a subway line outside Midtown can cost less.
  • Enjoy the free stuff: the tree, the windows, the markets, Central Park, the Brooklyn Bridge and Dyker Heights don't cost anything. Bryant Park's rink has free admission if you bring your own skates (rentals are paid).
  • Book paid experiences ahead: Rockefeller Rink, Radio City and observation decks use timed tickets. Off-peak times are often cheaper and less crowded.
  • Use the subway. It usually beats a taxi in holiday traffic.
  • Eat lunch at the markets and save your sit-down meal for dinner.

Crowd tips

  • Visit the tree early in the morning or late at night. Early evening is the busiest time.
  • Do your shopping on weekdays. Weekend afternoons at the markets are the most crowded.
  • Watch your bags in busy spots, and keep your phone in a zipped pocket.
  • Christmas Eve and Christmas Day: some markets and shops close or open shorter hours. Check before you go.

Weather and packing

December in New York is usually cold, with short days and wind that funnels between the tall buildings. It can rain, sleet or snow. It gets dark in the late afternoon, which is when the lights look best.

Pack:

  • A warm, water-resistant coat plus layers (indoors is heated)
  • Comfortable waterproof shoes, since you'll walk a lot
  • Hat, scarf and touchscreen gloves
  • A power bank, because cold drains phone batteries fast
  • A small crossbody bag for crowds
  • A foldable tote for market gifts

When is the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting in 2026?

It hasn't been announced. As of 28 Sep 2026, the official Rockefeller Center site says to "check back later this year" for 2026 tree details, so there is no official 2026 lighting date yet.

For context, the last three ceremonies were held on the Wednesday after Thanksgiving: Nov 29, 2023; Dec 4, 2024; and Dec 3, 2025, according to NBCUniversal and Rockefeller Center. That's a past pattern, not a 2026 announcement. The 2025 tree came down on Saturday, Jan 10. If you want to see the tree lit, plan to visit after the ceremony and check rockefellercenter.com for the 2026 date.

When is the best time to visit New York at Christmas?

It depends on what you want to see. As of 28 Sep 2026, all of the officially dated attractions are open at the same time from Nov 4, 2026 to Jan 3, 2027: the Rockettes (Nov 4 – Jan 4), Bryant Park's rink (from Oct 28) and Holiday Shops (to Jan 3), and the Rockefeller Center rink (from Oct 10). Thanksgiving weekend adds the 100th Macy's Parade on Nov 26.

If seeing the Rockefeller tree lit matters to you, go after the lighting ceremony, whose 2026 date hasn't been announced. For smaller crowds at Bryant Park, the park recommends weekdays, mornings, and dates before Thanksgiving or after New Year. We don't have official crowd data for other attractions.

How many days do I need in New York at Christmas?

Four days is enough for Midtown, Central Park, downtown and Brooklyn's lights. Three days covers the main Midtown sights (the tree, the rinks, the windows and Radio City are close together), and five gives you time for museums and neighborhoods.

Book timed-ticket attractions (Rockefeller rink, Radio City, observation decks) ahead for December, and build your days around any date-specific events you want, such as the Nov 26 parade.

Do I need a visa or ESTA to visit New York?

It depends on your nationality: depending on your passport, you'll need either an ESTA travel authorization under the Visa Waiver Program or a U.S. visitor visa. Check the official ESTA site (esta.cbp.dhs.gov) and the U.S. Department of State (travel.state.gov) well before you book flights.

We don't list which countries qualify, because the rules change; use the official U.S. government sites or the U.S. embassy in your country.
