For a first trip to Egypt, 8 days is enough to see Cairo and Giza, fly to Luxor and sail the Nile to Aswan. Winter, the coolest months, is the most comfortable time: summer heatwaves can exceed 104°F (40°C), according to the U.S. State Department. The U.S. advisory for Egypt is Level 2, "Exercise increased caution" (issued July 15, 2025, current as of October 19, 2026), with Level 4 for specific areas that this route doesn't visit.

  • United States (State Department), issued July 15, 2025 and current as of October 19, 2026: Level 2, "Exercise increased caution," due to terrorism, crime and health. Level 4, do not travel, to the Northern and Middle Sinai Peninsula, the Western Desert unless traveling with a professionally licensed tour company, and Egyptian border areas.
  • Spain (MAEC), recommendations current as of October 19, 2026: Cairo, Alexandria and El Alamein, Luxor, Aswan, the mainland Red Sea coast and Sharm el-Sheikh are low-risk areas. Avoid North Sinai and the Rafah border area. MAEC recommends traveling with an agency where possible and limiting road trips.

FAQ

How many days is enough to visit Egypt?

For the classic Cairo, Luxor and Aswan route with a Nile cruise, 8 days covers the highlights at a comfortable pace: 2 to 3 days in Cairo and Giza plus a Luxor–Aswan cruise, which usually runs 3 to 4 nights (probable; it depends on the operator). Five days is enough for Cairo and Luxor, but not for a cruise.

What is the best itinerary for Egypt?

For a first visit, the most common route is Cairo and Giza first, a flight to Luxor, and a Nile cruise south to Aswan, with an optional day trip to Abu Simbel before flying back to Cairo. Those cities are also listed as low-risk tourist areas by Spain's foreign ministry.

Is it risky to travel to Egypt right now?

The U.S. State Department rates Egypt Level 2, "Exercise increased caution," in an advisory issued July 15, 2025 and current as of October 19, 2026, with Level 4 for the Northern and Middle Sinai, the Western Desert without a licensed tour company, and border areas. Spain's recommendations, current as of October 19, 2026, list Cairo, Luxor and Aswan as low-risk tourist areas.

Is 5 days in Egypt enough?

Five days is enough for Cairo and Giza plus Luxor, but not for a Nile cruise. To add the Luxor–Aswan cruise, which usually runs 3 to 4 nights (probable; it depends on the operator), plan on 8 days, as in the itinerary above.
